What to Expect

Part 1: Drawing A Head

In this session, you'll explore the fundamentals of drawing the head through a topographic approach.

Rather than focusing on facial features alone, you'll learn about the underlying structure of bones and tissues, considering the head as a landscape made up of peaks, valleys, curves and planes.

Together you'll:

  • Explore the anatomy and structure of the head
  • Examine hard and soft forms through mark-making
  • Investigate convex and concave surfaces
  • Create experimental and exploratory drawings
  • Focus on observation, learning and process rather than finished outcomes

Part 2: Drawing A Head

Building on the ideas introduced in Part 1, this session continues to explore the head through observation and expressive mark-making.

Using a wider range of materials and approaches, you'll experiment with rhythm, pace and tone while exploring what gives a drawing life, depth and presence.

Together you'll:

  • Explore different drawing materials and techniques
  • Experiment with fast and slow drawing approaches
  • Examine tone, weight and gravity
  • Develop three-dimensional form and depth
  • Create rich, expressive observational drawings

It is recommended, but not essential, to have attended Drawing A Head: Part 1 before booking Part 2.

What You'll Take Home

  • A collection of observational and experimental drawings
  • Improved confidence in drawing from observation
  • A deeper understanding of the structure of the head
  • New approaches to mark-making and tone
  • Techniques to continue developing your drawing practice
