Devonport Column Self-Guided Tour

Multiple dates and times Market Hall, PL1 4PS

Enjoy a self-guided tour of the Devonport Column.

Please note: All visits commence at the Market Hall, Duke Street at the allotted time from where visitors will be escorted to the column for their self-guided tour.

The Column was built with the permission of King George IV between 1824 - 1827 to commemorate the establishment of Devonport as a separate town. This 124ft structure has also provided many services to the Devonport community including as a WWII fire watch station.

Now it is open once more to provide visitors with some of the most spectacular views across Devonport, Plymouth and the Tamar!

  • All visits are limited to 12 people, booked in advance, and are self-guided.
  • Access to the top of the column is via a narrow spiral staircase of 137 stone steps. We advise visitors to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and to bear in mind the physical nature of the ascent before booking.
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Unfortunately, because of the historic nature of the column we are sorry to say it is not accessible to all.
  • We reserve the right to cancel visits due to unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather.
